Cotton Chainmail

Cotton Chainmail began with a pile of unsold shirts and a question about armour. Each piece is a plain cotton T-shirt, painted by hand, one at a time — no stencils, no repeats, no second edition. The drawings run over the seams and onto the sleeves, so the garment has to be turned and worn to be read completely.

The title takes the logic of chainmail seriously: a garment made of many small identical parts that together become something else. Here the parts are the shirts themselves. Worn singly they are clothing. Photographed as a group, laid out on grass or hung side by side, they read as one work.
